ICL stands for “ Implantable Collamer Lens”. They are also very commonly referred to as Phakic IOL’s.

ICL are micro thin lenses implanted over the natural lens inside eye to correct spectacle power. It is similar to a contact lens placed in eye except that a contact lens is temporary and has to be put on daily basis whereas ICL in put inside the eye permanently. The vision with an ICL is better than that of a contact lens because the lens is a non moving lens and is better able to correct cylindrical power along with spherical power.

ICL gives high definition vision and does not require creating corneal flap and corneal tissue removal as in LASIK, SMILE & other laser specs removal procedures. It also does not cause any corneal dryness as seen in LASIK, SMILE & others.

ICL is of two types, ICL Spherical and ICL Toric. Spherical ICL lens corrects only spherical power of glasses. Toric ICL lens corrects cylinder along with spherical power of glasses.

ABOUT ICL

The ICL or Implantable Collamer Lens is an artificial lens which is similar in function as a contact lens, and in structure it closely resembles an intraocular lens (IOL). The lens material, which is technologically advanced and UV protected, has the collagen base which makes it totally compatible with our body.

  • No dry eyes
  • High definition vision which is sharp and crisp
  • Excellent Night Vision
  • Preferred choice in thin corneas
  • UV protection inbuilt in ICL
  • A typically quick, 15 minute procedure and most people are able to resume daily activities in just a few short days with clearer vision

ICL is of two types; ICL Spherical and ICL Toric. Spherical ICL lens corrects only spherical power of glasses. Toric ICL lens corrects cylinder along with spherical power of glasses. With toric ICL, astigmatism of upto 4 diopters can be corrected.

  • ICL TORIC
  • ICL SPHERICAL

  • It offers exceptionally superior HD VISION and that too in less than 15 minutes.
  • Immediate results are experienced by patients as soon as the procedure gets over. Recovery period too is very short as patients can get back to work in a day’s time.
  • It's a procedure which improves refractive error permanently. But, in case the patient is not satisfied with the surgical outcome, the lens can be replaced/removed.
  • Corneal tissue is not at all tampered or cut during the implantation of the ICL.

During LASIK procedure, the shape of the cornea is to be changed. This involves cutting and removing eye tissue that cannot be replaced. Hence changes once made during LASIK are permanent and cannot be reversed. While during Implantable Collamer Lens surgery, the implantable lens is placed in front of the natural lens of the eye, this results in better focusing abilities of the lens which improves vision drastically.

And if at all your prescription changes or you are not too happy with your ICL implant surgery, the lens is replaceable and removable. However, the procedure is not advisable for people with severe eye conditions such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, etc.
