ABOUT CORNEA
The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye. It lies directly in front of the iris and pupil, and it allows light to enter the eye.
A corneal ulcer is an open sore in the cornea. It is usually produced by an infection, commonly bacterial, fungal or viral. The ulcer can either be located in the center of the cornea and greatly affect the vision or be placed in the periphery and not affect it so much. There are at least 25,000 cases of bacterial and fungal corneal ulcers each in India every year. Infections that develop in the cornea are frequently associated with trauma, contact lens overuse and dry eyes.
The first symptoms of keratoconus can be experienced in mid teens in the form of blurry vision. As the condition progresses, it significantly affects the eye and may cause sudden loss of vision. Once diagnosed, the condition can be managed with the right lenses. It is recommended that the patient takes regular eye check ups if diagnosed with Keratoconus.
